Thanks to the efforts of hundreds of volunteers, United Way's costs are low: Fund-raising costs are 10.0 percent and management and general expenses are 6.0 percent. A further 3 percent goes to planning and allocations to ensure that contributions are used wisely and for the most urgently needed services. Through the United Way Citizen Review Process, local volunteers annually evaluate the needs first-hand. However, if you have special desires which aren't met by any of these agencies, you can designate your gift to any tax-exempt charitable organization.
